The Concejalía de Festejos del Ayuntamiento de Arrecife have announced the dates and theme for the 2010 Carnaval (carnival) in Arrecife. The capital of Lanzarote always starts the island’s carnaval season and the inspiration for this years costumes will be based on Michael Jackson in homage to the “King of Pop”. The costumes will depict the fun and magic seen through the decades, from The Jacksons back in the 1960’s to Michael Jackson in the millennium.
The fun starts on the 5th until the 17th February with the usual carnaval celebrations of fiestas, drag, murgas, batucada and the burning of the sardine. The full programme will be released closer to the event but in the meantime here are some key dates for your diary:
13th February La Gala elección de la Reina del Carnaval – Carnaval Queen
14th February La Gala elección de la Reina del Carnaval – Drag Queen
15th February Mascaritas del Carnaval – main parade (16th February will be a fiesta)
17th February La Sardina Muerta – mourning parade for the end of carnaval
