A motion was presented recently at the Cabildo, for an extension to the runway at the airport in Lanzarote. Loly Luzardo, of the Party Popular presented the motion, suggesting that the runway should be built further into the sea to accommodate larger and longer range aircraft. Most aircraft types can currently use the runway, but larger planes have to limit their fuel and take off weight in order to be able to get airborne. Luzardo suggested that this was limiting the island in attracting long distance tourism from North or South America, for example. He felt the current runway is “negatively affecting the tourist and commercial interests of Lanzarote.”
Aena, the Spanish airports authority have already presented several solutions to the Ayuntamiento, and are awaiting an environmental impact report from the airport director before coming up with their final plans.
