AENA confirmed yesterday evening that an preliminary agreement has been reached with the unions which means that the Spanish airport strikes planned through Easter and Summer have been called off. The announcement came after a 20 hour long meeting involving the Secretary of State for Transport Isaiah Táboas and President of AENA Juan Lema amongst others. The agreement still has to be endorsed by the workers but it guarantees their labour rights and working conditions so it is expected to be ratified. The agreement states that the new airport management model will ensure the economic and financial viability of the existing network of airports and is effective until the 31st December 2018. Although here in the Canary Islands we're thankful that the decision to call off the strikes has been made, it does raise the question if the announcement to strike was actually necessary.
