25th Anniversary of the Special Needs School in Lanzarote

The special education centre Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes in Tahiche is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this week.

There will be special activities during the 16th, 17th and 18th of May to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the official opening of the centre which took place on the 18th May in 1987 by Don Luis Balbuena Castellano the Minister of Education for the Canary Islands Government.

The Centro Público Específico de Educación Especial Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes centre in Tahiche is the only one of it’s kind on the island, helping to educate children aged between 3 and 21 years old, who have special educational needs. They currently have 50 students attending who have disabilities ranging from mental, motor or sensory difficulties, these children are cared for by 30 professionals including special education teachers, speech therapists, physical education teachers, physical therapists and teaching assistants.

A small ceremony will be held at the school at 6.30pm on Friday 18th May where anyone that has been part of the school over the years is invited to attend.
