The grape harvest in Lanzarote has been better than expected although still poor in comparison to previous years.
The vendimia forecast was for 450,000 kilos of grapes to be harvested, this target has now been revised to an expected 600,000 kilos by the time the harvest ends around the 15th September. The figures were released by the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen for Lanzarote, they still qualifiy as the poorest harvest within the past 60 years. According to the data recorded so far, 485,000 kilos of Malvasia grapes have been collected which should increase to 600,000 kilos when the listán negra, Diego & Moscatel are harvested. Lanzarote normally produces a harvest in excess of 2 million kilos of grapes to produce local wine so the figures are still catastrophic for the vineyards. According to the Asociación de Viticultores y Bodegas Artesanales de Lanzarote some winemakers have confirmed that the harvest is so disappointing that they have not even bothered to collect the small amount of grapes produced this year. |
