Día de Canarias, Lanzarote

There was lots of traditional music and dancing at the huge Sunday market in Teguise last weekend, to celebrate Día de Canarias, together with displays of Lucha Canaria (Canarian wrestling) and samples of food and drink to taste. Romería - Fiesta de San Isidro Labrador 2009

P1010576 There was a lovely atmosphere at the village of Uga in Lanzarote on Saturday, around the streets prior to the start of the romería, there were flashes of colour with the variety of traditional skirts worn, a selection of horses from tiny Shetland ponies to a big cart horse, lots of donkeys including two baby ones and a few camels including the star of the show, which was a very young camel. Lanzarote Carnival 2009 Video

We were filming at the main parade at Arrecife Carnival yesterday, and here's a little highlights video for you to enjoy!

The weather was warm and dry, with a slight hint of a calima, which cleared during the night. The party went on until dawn!

The celebrations in the municipality of Teguise are from the 9th to the 15th March.

Monday 9th - Thursday 12th there are workshops in the local centro socioculturales for children to prepare their carnaval costumes.

Wednesday 11th & Thursday 12th 8.30pm Pasacalle along the promenade (paseo marí­timo)

Friday 13th Children's carnaval at 5pm in Plaza de los Leones in Teguise and batucada at 8pm

Saturday 14th Grand carnaval parade at 5.30pm in Costa Teguise which starts outside the Sands Beach Resort and along Avenida Islas Canarias ending in the Pueblo Marinero.

New Year's Eve, Lanzarote

If you haven't already made plans of where to spend your New Year's eve in Lanzarote then I thought I'd tell you about my favourite one since living here. My ultimate restaurant is still Ikarus situated in La Villa de Teguise, the old capital, situated in Plaza Clavijo & Fajardo just down from the main landmark the church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and Plaza de la Constitución. Ikarus offers a very warm welcome in an atmospheric building with local artist paintings displayed on the old stone walls, lots of original wood, a courtyard and cobbled floor.  read more »
