Raggle Taggle Gypsies

Derek & Jake 1 Lanzarote’s hardest working duo are out and about on Wednesday 17th March, St. Patrick’s Day.

This duo only generally work one day a year together but certainly make the most of it!

Derek and his son Jake, 14 have been playing together for the past four years and are so much in demand this year that they are going to pull out all the stops for a shattering four gig paddy’s day bonanza.

Derek plays acoustic guitar and sings while Jake is the mandolin maestro, his nimble fingers making the double stringed instrument sing! The energy is infectious from this musical pair who enjoy the gigs as much as the audience. They love the participation of the crowd and singing and dancing is encouraged, get up and do your turn or just sing a long in your seat.

Their set includes some haunting traditional songs such as Finnegans Wake, Raggle Taggle Gypsies and Whiskey In The Jar, the big chorus crowd pleasers Dirty Old Town and Galway Girl and some more modern Celtic rock stuff with  covers from Horslips, Waterboys, Rem, The Pogues  and Steve Earl to mention a few.  read more »

St Patrick's Day Parade in Lanzarote, 17th March 2010

St Patrick's Day Parade Lanzarote For the first time in Lanzarote a grand event has been organized to celebrate Ireland’s Patron saint’s day, on March 17th.

There have been music events in Puerto del Carmen on St. Patrick’s Day in previous years which have generated great interest and have been the inspiration for this fun family day.

The Irish community led by well known entertainer Charlie Chapman in collaboration with the tourism department have put together a full afternoon of entertainment for all the family to celebrate. Within this schedule will be the “Shamrock Walk” which will be a parade down the main Avenida of Puerto del Carmen. Everyone is invited to join in and “Be Irish for the day”

Wear green if you have something but most importantly wear a smile and be ready for the craic. The Irish like the Canarians know how to enjoy themselves and as we have recently enjoyed Carnaval in all the towns of Lanzarote, we should be well practiced for the Shamrock Walk.  read more »
