Recipe, Bienmesabe

250g almonds
500ml water
500g sugar
3 to 4 egg yolks
Few small sponges

Boil, toast and grind the almonds and then beat in the egg yolks. Heat the water and add the sugar to make a syrup, adding a bit more sugar if required. Stir in the egg yolks, almonds and lastly the sponges until the mixture thickens. The mixture should look like thick honey, there are different methods of making bienmesabe, some do not toast the almonds and others leave out the sponges and add more almonds.

Roscón de Reyes

Roscón de Reyes, Lanzarote

It is tradition to eat a cake called Roscón de Reyes on the 6th January, this cake is a light ring of sweet bread with candied fruits set into the top and the centre filled with vanilla or chocolate mousse. In each cake is a tiny porcelain baby/king and a bean, if you get the baby/king you will have good luck and you wear the gold paper hat and its said if you find the bean you have to pay for the cake!

We received a gift of this cake today from our neighbours with a bottle of Lanzarote moscatel, a sweet pudding wine which complemented each other perfectly.  read more »

Taiwan Chinese Restaurant, Arrecife

With a plethora of Chinese restaurants in Lanzarote there are many good ones available around the resorts. The best without a doubt is the Taiwan in Arrecife, situated in Calle Canalejas the easiest way to find the restaurant is to park under the Gran Hotel and when you surface from the car park, cross over the road and walk through to the side road runnig parallel to the coast road and the Taiwan is on the corner. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, the portions are huge and I can promise that you won't be disappointed. The lemon chicken is the best I've ever eaten!  read more »
