Spanish Lessons For Foreigners In Teguise

Teguise The Ayuntamiento de Teguise announced this week that they are launching Spanish lessons for foreigners that live in the municipality. The council said that there are more than 5,200 foreigners living in the Teguise area according to their statistical information and they would like to help them integrate into the community.

Visit The Spanish Navy Boat - Grosa, 13th November 2010

Grosa de la Armada Española The Spanish Navy (Armada Española) patrol boat “Grosa” will be in docked in Arrecife, Lanzarote from today until Sunday 14th November 2010. In an official notice from the Ministry of Defence (Ministerio de Defensa) the public have been invited to visit the ship on Saturday 13th November between the following times:

10.00 to 13.30

16.30 to 18.30

Fuga de San Diego, 12th November

My daughter reminded me last night that today the 12th November it is the Fuga de San Diego, an annual tradition where students go to school but “escape” from their classes. Some children don’t even go into school on this day, others go and make their escape but after years of just accepting this was what happened today, I wanted to know where had the tradition of Fuga de San Diego come from?

fuga de san diego 2008 y la ermita de san diego The colegios in Lanzarote are securely gated during school hours, if a child does not attend school a phone call is made to the parents to make sure they are aware that they are not truant. If a child needs to leave school for any reason a parent / guardian has to go to the school to sign a form detailing the reason and what time they left the building. So why is it that the children can be released without the parent’s consent or supervision on Fuga de San Diego / Flight of San Diego?

This Canary Islands tradition started in Tenerife when a new teacher Diego Ximenez de Cisneros arrived at the Instituto Cabrera Pinto in La Laguna during November of 1919. He decided to stop the students from attending the Romería of San Diego del Monte, the children disobeyed him and escaped from the school.

III Feria de Comercio, Ocio y Gastronomía, Tías 13th & 14th November 2010

Tias centre A two day market can be found at El Pavon in the Plaza Anfiteatro in Tías this weekend. The event has been organised by the Ayuntamiento de Tias and the Asociacion de Empresarios de Tías and each shop in Tías is expected to have a stall representing them.

The market will be open Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th November from 9am to 8pm.
