Lanzarote Excursion, Sail to Alegranza

Beach at Alegranza When offered the chance recently to take a day trip sailing from Lanzarote to the remote island of Alegranza we jumped at the chance.

The island of Alegranza is the furthest tip of the the protected area known as the Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo.

The Archipiélago consists of the Islotes del Norte: Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste, Montaña Clara, La Graciosa and Alegranza together with the Los Riscos de Famara and Las Llanuras del Jable zones in Lanzarote.

Our adventure started in the tiny harbour of Órzola in Lanzarote where we boarded the Biosfera Express La Graciosa ferry to take us on the first leg of our journey.

The date for Alegranza had been chosen some weeks before, this crossing is dependent on the right weather conditions fortunately we had been blessed with a calm, sunny day and great visibility.  read more »

Lanzarote Football, AD Huracán 0 Lanzarote 2

Late goals from captain Rubén Rodríguez and new signing Yaco make it three out of three wins for the Rojillos which sends them top of the league on goal difference.

Rubén Rodríguez The opening stages of the match were not attractive with Lanzarote trying to force the play but the Gran Canarian side defended well. Most of the action took place in the centre of the pitch with neither team looking threatening. The only real chance of a dismal first half fell to Lanzarote. In the 16thminute Ayoze whistled in a shot from the edge of area but he saw his effort narrowly fly past the far post.

The second half began with controversy. Only two minutes into the restart and Lanzarote thought they were a goal up. Ayoze had the ball in the back of the net but the Ref believed the classy midfielder had handled the ball and the goal was disallowed. To top off his disappointment he was also handed a yellow card from the official.  read more »

Church Services In Lanzarote

We were asked recently by Kevin for information about the church services available in Lanzarote. The church is an integral part of life in Spain and much more than a weekly religious service. The church is celebrated throughout the annual calendar with local fiestas and traditions handed down through the generations. Indeed, almost all of our many fiestas are celebrations related to saints or the Catholic church. Here’s our guide to churches in Lanzarote with their services and contact details.

Tobacco Tax Increase

Cigarette Packet Cigarettes are due to rise by 20 to 30 cents per packet in the Canary Islands according to José Manuel Soria the Consejero de Economía y Hacienda and Vice President of the Canarian Government in a statement made earlier today.

It’s a well known fact that tobacco is cheap to purchase when on holiday in the Canaries and many succumb to the temptation of smuggling more than their duty free allowance back to the UK. Typically a carton of local brand cigarettes are €10 per 200 and international brands €18 - €20 per carton.  read more »

Lanzarote Football, Lanzarote 3 Corralejo 0

The Rojillos cruise to victory over their Fuerteventura rivals and lead the division with three other sides all on maximum points.

UD Lanzarote Team 050910

Lanzarote began the match similar to last week allowing their opponents to get the better of the opening stages. The Majoreros (Fuerteventurians) did not capitalize on their early dominance with striker Dino failing with two good chances.

By the quarter hour mark the Rojillos had picked up the pace of the game and were clearly in charge in the centre.

A strike from 20 yards from Centre back Adrián narrowly flew past the Corralejo keeper’s left hand post. In the 23rd minute good work from Rosmen and Ayoze troubled the Fuerteventura defence with the latter pulling back the ball across the face of goal only to see the danger momentarily cleared by the defence.

On the next assault the Rojillos claimed their first home goal of the campaign through the unlikely source of defender Ángel Gil. Again, good work from Ayoze who found striker Echedey and his effort from six yards rebounded off the keepers legs and Ángel kept his nerve and blasted the ball low and into the far corner and in doing so equaled his last seasons goal scoring tally.  read more »
