Bar – Cafetería Ca ’Pipo is situated in the town centre of Playa Blanca, in the newest shopping area C.C. Correillo near the HiperDino supermarket. They have a “menu anticrisi” which is available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week between 12:30 and 15:30. For just €3.90 you get a starter, main meal, dessert and a drink of water. The starter is a choice of salad or soup and the main meal is a choice of fish or meat, there is a dessert provided which can be fruit, ice cream or cake.
We were offered either vegetable soup or potato and vegetable salad, we opted for the salad and a huge portion was immediately brought out with fresh bread. The cubes of potato were cooked to perfection mixed with fresh chives and mayonnaise, I managed 3/4 of the serving before admitting defeat.
The village of Femés has been busy with final preparations for their annual fiesta. The work on the building in the plaza is almost finished, the giant carpa (tent) has been erected, flags have been stretched over the roads and the kerb stones have been given a fresh coat of white paint. Also, the traffic passing through Femés now has the option to continue straight on over the roundabout or route around the square to see the wonderful mirador to Playa Blanca and Fuerteventura.

We started the month of June with a high temperature alert for Lanzarote. We were warned to expect temperatures over 34ºC together with little or no wind which we enjoyed and our dogs slept in the shade or on the cool tiled floors. We had rain overnight on the 10th, there were some quite heavy showers which was unusual for the time of year.
Our beautiful blue sky was lost for a week to 10 days from the mid to end of the month, it seems it went to visit the UK to shine over Glastonbury and Wimbledon! read more »

The Guanches staple food was Gofio and this has remained in the Canarian gastronomy along with meat from their grazing flocks of goats, sheep and pigs which also provided dairy products of milk and butter. The dishes were influenced over time by the explorers calling into the islands before sailing the Atlantic, these ships arrived stocked with sugar cane, vines and bananas.

The first car to leave the road was (no 30) Francisco Lemes in his Ford Escort WRC, this accident happened on the long stretch after the junction from Tabayesco and before the first bend on the ascent to the mirador. Bouncing along two stretches of barrier with enough force to lift the concrete out of the ground, the Escort came to rest minus a wheel and blocking the road halting the rally whilst the marshals called for an ambulance to check the driver and a grúa to remove the car.
The race started with the same order as before and unbelievably the next car to crash was (No 32) Jesús Machín in his Skoda Octavia WRC another driver from the Escudería Racing Tías team. This crash happened right in front of me, the wheels locked and the Skoda slid straight into the bend half way up the climb, the low wall held and Jesús emerged from the car to calmly remove his helmet and make a mobile phone call to report the damage.
Remarkably despite his crash Jesús Machín won the event thanks to his previous time of 4:43.785, if you’d like to see some of the action on video have a look at this one from Submarinis.

We were asked recently by a comment from Rankgowers if we could report back on the progress of the restoration of Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
Work on the popular beach of Playa Flamingo started at the end of October following a 4 year wait, I last visited the beach as part of my promenade walk in January 2010 where evidence of work was visible and part of the beach was still open.
However at the moment the beach is closed with no access allowed, today it looked more like a building site with diggers, a crane and dumper trucks driving loads off the beach. Unfortunately there is no indication of how long the project is expected to take on the notice board, simply the presupuesto amount of €2.568,178 Euros stated.
