Fish Farm in Playa Quemada

Visitors to the tiny picturesque village of Playa Quemada or guests aboard the Catlanza catamaran trips to Papagayo might have noticed the fish farms situated off the coast of Lanzarote.

The farm is owned by local company Yaizatun SA and situated in the area known as Bahía de Ávila. Founded in 2001 the farm was built as a nursery for yellow fin tuna, in 2008 the scheme was in difficulties so the farm took the decision to change their stock to seabass (dorada) and seabream (lubina) with much greater success. Now around 2,000 tonnes of fish are sold each year to major retailers supplying the central markets of Madrid and Barcelona in Spain and Portugal.

Road Closure Details, Costa Teguise, 26th March

Teguise council have released two maps showing the temporary bus route and stops as well as the road closures for Costa Teguise during carnival on Saturday 26th March 2011.

The first map details the bus route from 15:00 to 23:00, the black dots mark the temporary stops which are on the junction of the roundabout on Avenida del Mar and at Calle Los Dragos (near the FT and Don Tango).

Lanzarote School of Music, Inscription For 2011-2012

The Escuela Insular de Música de Lanzarote has opened inscription for the academic year 2011 – 2012.

Via Medular Currently the school has 72 new places for students which consist of the following classes:

11 places for children aged 6 years for music and movement

16 places for children aged 7 years for music and movement

15 places for children aged 8 & 9 years old for initiation B

15 places for children aged 10 to 14 years old for 1º A

15 places for adults aged from 15 years upwards for  1º A

The school currently has a staff of 22 teachers teaching singing and the following instruments violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, timple, accordion, piano, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, horn, tuba, euphonium and percussion to 463 students.

The Old Harbour in Puerto del Carmen

Whilst I was waiting for the start of the Leprechaun dive on Saturday, I went for a wander around the Old Harbour area of Puerto del Carmen, previously known as La Tiñosa, Lanzarote.

I started out from Playa Chica, walking along the coastal path. The sea was flat and calm and it was already a lovely warm day, there were a few people fishing from the shore on the rocks there and a small fishing boat attracting seagulls. Around the corner where the Restaurant Puerto Bahia was just setting the tables, I’m always struck by the gardens in this area, beautifully planted and immaculately kept. It was around 9am, the only sounds were the lap of the waves breaking and the odd clink of cutlery.

Carnival Programme Tinajo 2011


Tinajo is nearly the last of our carnival programme guides for 2011, events will be held from 25th to 27th March which co-incides with the celebrations over in Costa Teguise. The carnival poster was designed by Sra. Mª Nela Hernández Callero and is titled "Nadando desde Roma" which translates to Swimming from Rome.

Friday 25th March

21:00 Inauguration of carnival at the Salón Social in Tinajo with a moder dance class, performance from the comparsas Sur Caliente and Drag Queen Gala. Later there will be a verbena (party) with live music from Suso y Familia and Cuarteto Atlántico.  read more »

Facelift For Famara

Teguise council started work in Famara last week with their plan de embellecimiento for a facelift of this surfer’s paradise.

Famara Beach A host of new furniture for the streets has been ordered, with workmen already installing new benches and bins as well as cleaning common areas and gardens. Additionally 170 new streetlights have already been installed through thirty streets, the second phase to improve public lighting in the Caleta de Famara which already has funding, will begin soon.

The direction of traffic has been reorganised to minimise the flow of vehicles through residential areas with new road signs and markings.
